Skateboarder Tony Hawk with a hawk

This is some commissioned work for a range of clients. My website overhaul meant I didn’t post it back in October, but it was recent then.

Way, way back, last July (!) skateboarder Tony Hawk visited ZSL London Zoo, which features as a playable location in Pro Skater 3 + 4. While there, he met Tony the Hawk.

But it was immediately obvious the young bird just wanted to eat his mouse (yum). Also, I couldn’t use flash. It was all very difficult and quick, really. The portrait of Tony is a better photo.

Other options for celebrity / bird PR stories: Gull Gadot, Owlivia Rodrigo.

The following are from a series of shoots I’ve undertaken at the British Museum and at the V&A, where students learn about art, textiles and antiquities up close.

(Below) Alec Manning, head of Data Science at Three UK. I used a blue rim light (also known as a kicker light or edge light) in the headshot because blue equals science and tech.

(Above) Dr Cora Pettipas, photographed for HSBC. The yellow / gold sofa was a lucky find, complementing as it does her blue dress and a similar colour to her scarf. I used an orange gel on the opaque glass in the upright shot for the same reason, and they have a warm feel to them.

(Below) Chris Burford, CFO of Boxpark. I’m usually reluctant to use signs and logos because (1) words should be in the text (2) they’re rarely photogenic and (3) they’re often eight feet up on a wall, and you find yourself working around and shoehorning them in. However, Boxparks are comprised of repurposed shipping containers, black and metallic, so not the most appealing background, or rather - at best - “descriptive”. So I went with the logo for the main image here as it was neon, head height, and not too small. And we all love a bit of neon.

Radiologist Amaka Offiah

(Above) For these portraits of Amaka Offiah, Vice-President of Clinical Radiology at the Royal College of Radiologists, we didn’t have anywhere useful indoors - just plain walls and unhelpful meeting rooms - so we went outside once we’d taken a few “safe” shots (right). Our location was determined by where we could find cover, or a break in the rain. If there’s anything to say about this, it’s about the importance of blagging. To get anything outside, I needed to have someone help with lighting (gusty weather blows over lighting stands); look after my kit (protecting it from rain and furacious loiterers); and keep the vibe going. I had no assistant (and, as I’ve talked about elsewhere, my patter wasn’t great that day, perhaps due to too much / lack of coffee), but I thought maybe one of the receptionists might be able to spare just a few minutes, and perhaps could she help..? And she could and did. Sometimes you have to just ask.

(Below) You can work out (some of) how something is lit by looking at the catchlights in the eyes. This headshot uses two lights on the subject, and one on the background. I rarely shoot this way but I needed to copy the house style.

Below are some student lifestyle stock / prospectus images. The eagle-eyed will notice we used (above) another logo - but again, it’s right behind the subjects, isn’t forced, and has a bit of interest to it.

(Below) Another video game launch. These were taken at the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Featuring in the game are Milo Ventimiglia (Heroes; This Is Us), Kiernan Shipka (Mad Men; Sabrina the Teenage Witch), and Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead; Guardians of the Galaxy). The main image looks calm and considered, but this was set up and taken quickly, with half a dozen people off camera waiting and urging things along.
